Chapter 9 â Aurora
Morning came too soon. It had been a strange night, quiet but also pleasant, in the wake of her confession. Now Nick knew the truth about her, but instead of running for the hills like she'd feared, he decided that he still wanted her to stay. He'd wanted to help her. Even though she struggled to believe that he might actually care about her, that after all her pain and heartbreak and suffering, someone might still be able to find her beneath the cracks in her walls, the possibility uplifted her. It made waking up in the morning easier, it made it feel like there were fewer clouds raining on her every day.
And best of all: Nick himself. They'd had another lovely breakfast that morning, chatting, with everything back to normal between them. It didn't seem like their escapade on the couch, or her attempt to run away, or her story about Ray, had changed anything. If anything, perhaps, things between them seemed to be stronger than ever. How was that even possible when they weren't even together? When they barely knew each other?
But it didn't feel like they'd just met. It felt more like they'd always known each other in the back of their head, and now, here, together, their stories were all starting to make sense.
Ever since Nick had left for work, though, Aurora had been left at odds with what to do in his absence. She couldn't do anything without thinking more about Nick. On the couch, watching TV, she found her wishing he was there to hold her in his arms. In bed, she found herself wishing he would cuddle her close, kiss her neck, run his hands down her hips until their untameable lust got the best of them, and they twisted beneath the sheets. In the books she read, she found herself comparing everything to something Nick would have done or said instead.
And when she stared out of the window, she always imagined him running through the fields and trees. As a human, mostly, because she'd yet to see his bear form, just like he hadn't yet seen her wolf form. But she tried to imagine him as a bear, anyway, the two of them running through the fields and forests together.
Would he have thick, black fur? Gray? Brown? Or were bears much like wolves when they shifted, taking on attributes of their human forms?
In that case, his coat would be thick and beautiful, a rich auburn, like dark maple leaves.
No matter where she thought about him, no matter what way, he always made her smile. And the mystery of his bear form kept her guessing and curious about his life. She wanted to know more about him, everything she could find. Maybe that would be her mission over the next few days while she stayed with him in Clearwater.
She didn't want to invade his privacy, though. His house was his house, and she couldn't just start going through his things.
